According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, 135 police officers were killed in the line of duty in 2016.
That figure is the highest in five years and is a 10 percent increase over 2015.
Fox News reporter Caroline Shively joined Jon Scott Thursday on "Shepard Smith Reporting" to discuss these numbers.
Of the 135, 64 officers were shot and killed this year, which is a 56 percent increase over the 41 shot and killed last year.
Of those shootings, 21 officers died in ambush-style shootings, including five in Dallas in July and three in Baton Rouge, La., 10 days later.
Broken down by state, Texas had the most officer deaths at 17, followed by California with 10.
