The request was emailed to students by a teaching assistant on behalf of Prof. Alicia Chavez. A student in the American Studies course shared the message on Facebook.
The message from Jolie Chea reads:
Hi everyone,
One last message from me for the semester: on your final exams please refrain from using the term, ‘illegal immigrant’ to refer to human beings, -as Professor Chavez has requested (or mandated.) Instead please use ‘undocumented immigrant’ or ‘unauthorized entry’ to describe folks’ status or how they may have arrived in the US."
The course - "America, the Frontier, and the New West" - is described as a study of American political, cultural, and social life, focusing particularly on the western U.S.
The student criticized the professor for being biased against students who express conservative viewpoints, arguing that the decree on "undocumented immigrants" goes against freedom of speech.
