Rudy Giuliani, a longtime supporter of President-elect Donald Trump, has removed himself from consideration for a position in Trump's cabinet.
The former New York City mayor told Neil Cavuto this afternoon that he sent a letter to the Trump team on November 29, informing them that he wanted to withdraw his name from consideration.
He said that a number of people in the Trump camp said they didn't accept the letter and they wanted to keep him in the running.
"Then today, we agreed it was worth releasing it finally," Giuliani explained.
He acknowledged that the only position he was interested in was secretary of state, so it wasn't terribly difficult for him to turn down any of the other posts that were offered.
"My desire to be in the cabinet was great, but it wasn't that great," Giuliani said. "I thought I could play a better role being on the outside and continuing to be his close friend and his advisor."
"Anytime he has a need that he can't fill anywhere else, I'm the guy."
