Leah Remini on Leaving Scientology: Church Penalizes Followers for Asking Questions

Actress Leah Remini joined Megyn Kelly to discuss her new documentary program, which looks at the activities of the Church of Scientology, of which Remini used to be a member.
Recently on the program, a man receives an anonymous note demanding he not associate with his neighbor, and later finds a camera inside a birdhouse pointing at his home.
The church has criticized Remini, saying in a statement that the 'King of Queens' star "needs to move on with her life and career and stop blaming the church."
Remini said the repercussions from leaving the church do not scare her, but instead she said it was upsetting that the church is allegedly "a place of worship that systematically goes after people that speak out about it."
Remini implored other to research it for themselves, explaining that the church penalizes followers for looking at what's going on and asking questions.
"[If] your religious beliefs dictate and mandate that you hurt people, that is a problem," she said, adding that she didn't know these things until after she left.
She also recounted being reprimanded at actor Tom Cruise's wedding for asking about a church leader's wife. Remini said that really opened her eyes and made her take a closer look at the church's beliefs.
"I was told I didn't have the f-ing rank to ask where a human being was. That really did start the ball rolling. Because as a parishioner, as someone who was promoting and defending this church, I have a right to ask where a human being is regardless of my rank in the church," she explained.
