It was a fascinating field trip. Finding a way to turn all the plastic waste into fuel is a great contribution to reducing green house gas emissions and dependence on foreign oil. Everyone working there seemed to be highly motivated and working hard. It would be interesting to hear more comments omn this topic.
No. Not directly. Fuel made from plastic puts just as much green house gas into the atmosphere as any other oil-based fuel.

Where there is some indirect savings is from the reduction in the energy to bring new oil out of the ground. But I doubt that the student who reported this got it.
And, hopefully, I don't think JB would have said something so stupid.
