The hurdles once stopping broadcasters from moving
Post# of 96879
The advantage of 4K is simple: a clearer, sharper picture. Once viewers have a chance to see content with four times the resolution of HD and clearly view passive 3D images, it’s difficult to go back to viewing content broadcast in lower quality. An area where this is being most strongly felt is with consumers who are paying monthly subscriptions for premium sports content and are demanding a more immersive entertainment experience. Broadcasters need to ensure they have content that meets the demands of viewers who now know what they’re missing.
With 4K, content providers have been concerned with the increased bandwidth needed for live transmission, and the huge storage space for on-demand content. However, our technology partners have stayed ahead of the game, bringing you solutions that knock these hurdles aside.
Encoders are available that can deliver your high-value 4K content with pristine quality — exceptional clarity and colour depth, all with clear Dolby audio.
NTT’s HC11000 is a real-time encoder that can transmit high-quality video images with exceptional bitrate efficiency, low latency and low power consumption. It provides a broadcast-grade contribution solution encoding up to 100Mbps HEVC Main 10 4:2:2. These encoders support the Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG) developed by the BBC and NHK as a High Dynamic Range (HDR) system that increases the difference between black and white contrast, allowing for water to glisten, for example. Coupled with the HC11000 decoder, NTT provide a world-beating 4K contribution solution.
Until now, a hurdle to overcome was making 4K-related solutions bridge with existing technologies. Our partners have surmounted that obstacle, as exemplified by the solutions made available by Media Excel, Ateme and Keepixo on the distribution side of content delivery. All provide products with file and live capabilities for multi-bitrate OTT streaming using 4K UHD-HEVC, HD-HEVC, and H.264 for existing and legacy playback.
“4K is here, and consumers are demanding it,” says Lorna Garrett, Commercial Director of Garland. “We have the solutions that will allow quality content to be delivered efficiently, while saving bandwidth. These solutions let broadcasters meet the ever-challenging demands of their discerning subscribers.”
