Vice President-elect Mike Pence said Sunday that Mitt Romney is under "active consideration" to serve as secretary of State in a Donald Trump administration.
"The president-elect was very grateful that the Gov. Mitt Romney came out," Pence said on "Fox News Sunday."
"They had a good meeting. It was a warm and a substantive exchange."
Romney, the 2012 GOP nominee, met with Trump on Saturday to discuss foreign policy.
Pence said he and members of the Trump team spent about an hour with Romney. He said the team talked through substantive issues.
Trump and Romney also had some "private time together," Pence said.
"These are two people that earned their party's nomination. One was successful and won a mandate from the American people earlier this month to make America great again, another one fought hard to do that four years ago," Pence said.
"It was a cordial meting. But more importantly to the American people, it was a very substantive conversation and I know the president-elect was grateful that Mitt Romney came here to Trump National and spent some time and is willing to be considered for this important role at such an important time in the life of our nation."
Following the meeting, Romney said he had a "far-reaching conversation."
“We discussed those areas and exchanged our views on those topics. A very thorough and in-depth discussion in the time we had and appreciate the chance to speak with the president-elect and look forward to the coming administration," he told reporters after the meeting.
