Debate: Are Defiant Mayors of Sanctuary Cities Putting Their Communities at Risk?

Mayors of sanctuary cities across the U.S. say they will do everything they can to protect undocumented immigrants in their communities.

President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to cut federal funding to cities that shield criminal illegal immigrants from deportation.

As many mayors - including Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Seattle Mayor Ed Murray and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio - defend their sanctuary status, are they endangering those who reside in their cities legally?

On "Fox & Friends Weekend," Democratic strategist Jennice Fuentes and Fox News contributor Rachel Campos-Duffy debated this issue.

Fuentes argued that giving undocumented immigrants the ability to step out of the shadows makes it safer for individuals and communities.

"If I witness a crime, I don't have to be scared to come forward because I'm going to be deported simply for saying, 'Listen, I witnessed a crime being perpetrated,'" she said.

Campos-Duffy said that Trump has been clear that he's focused on securing the border and deporting illegal immigrants who are felons.

"He launched his campaign on this issue. He is not going to back down," Campos-Duffy said. "He is going to withhold federal funds from those cities that are harboring illegal felons. And he's going to go after them if they don't cooperate."

She said that mayors of sanctuary cities need to adjust to this "new political reality."

Pete Hegseth pointed out that Emanuel and the other mayors fail to distinguish between law-abiding illegal immigrants and those who are dangerous felons, offering blanket sanctuary for all.
