Digital Movie Rentals Continue to Grow as Redbox Rentals Continue to Drop
Renting movies is a huge business in the United States. Yet long gone are the days when stores such as Blockbuster dominated as now streaming is the way to go. Even Redbox can not keep up now that Digital is continuing to grow.
When it comes to movie rentals, no one rents more movies than Amazon Video. Not even Redbox rents more movies than Amazon Video, according to a recent report from DigitalSmiths, a research company that studies Americans viewing habits.
This week they released a study looking at what services people use to rent movies. This is what they found:
#1 Amazon Video 17.1%
#2 iTunes 8.4%
#3 Google Play 5.6%
#4 YouTube Movie Rentals 2.3%
#5 Vudu 2.2%
When you add them up Amazon Video rents more Movies Than iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu combined. Overall, Redbox was in second place, but their market share dropped from 15.8% in 2015 to just 12.8% in 2016. At the same time Amazon Video’s market share grew from 15.4% in 2015 (just behind Redbox) to 17.1% in 2016.
Across the board almost every major streaming movie rental service saw growth. iTunes’ market share grew from 7.7% in 2015 to 8.4% in 2016. Vudu’s market share grew from 1.6% in 2015 to 2.2% in 2016. Google Play’s share stayed steady at 2.3% in both 2015 and 2016.
Overall these trends show a solid growth of digital media from the big players to the small. It seems digital movie rentals are the future of movie rentals.
