New York – Municipal authorities in New York are beefing up security measures in response to fears about possible acts of terrorism around the Nov. 8 elections, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Friday.
Al-Qaeda hopes to carry out attacks Monday against targets in New York, Texas and Virginia, CBS News reported, citing unnamed U.S. intelligence sources.
"It's not at all clear how credible this is," De Blasio told WNYC's Brian Lehrer on the weekly Ask the Mayor radio show, describing the warning as "so nonspecific."
Even so, he said, "we're certainly in a vigilant position."
"We're already planning an extraordinary police presence for Tuesday, because, for the first time in memory, there will be two presidential campaigns having their victory celebrations in New York City on Tuesday night," de Blasio said.
Both candidates are set to await the results in Manhattan: Republican Donald Trump at the New York Hilton Midtown; Democrat Hillary Clinton at the Javits Convention Center.
The mayor told New Yorkers to expect to see a greater police presence starting Sunday, the day of the New York City Marathon, whose course extends to all five boroughs of the Big Apple.
Three people were killed and more than 250 others wounded in 2013 when bombs planted by terrorists detonated at the finish line of the Boston Marathon.
The New York Police Department's Critical Response Command, which with more than 500 members is the largest unit of its kind in the U.S., will be deployed throughout the period, De Blasio said.
