Emails linked to Weiner sexting investigation repo

WASHINGTON — The FBI announced Friday that it was reviewing whether classified information was sent in previously undiscovered emails connected to Hillary Clinton's use of a private server.
The surprising development could roil the presidential campaign in its final days.
Federal officials told The New York Times and The Associated Press that the new emails were discovered as part of an FBI investigation of Anthony Weiner, the former congressman who sent illicit text messages to a 15-year-old girl. Weiner, who has been involved in multiple sexting-related scandals, is married to top Clinton aide Huma Abedin. They separated earlier this year.
On Friday, in a letter to congressional leaders, FBI Director James Comey said the agency had "learned of the existence of emails that appear to be pertinent to the Clinton investigation" as part of an unrelated case.
Although the FBI has not yet reviewed the emails or determined with certainty whether they are relevant to any ongoing investigation, Comey said he wanted to keep members of Congress aware of any developments.
"I believe it is important to update your Committees about our efforts in light of my previous testimony," he wrote.
Later Friday, Clinton called on the FBI to be more forthcoming about what it's reviewing. She noted that Comey said he wasn't sure the emails were significant, and she expressed confidence that the review would not change the outcome of the investigation into her private email server.
"It's imperative that the bureau explain this issue in question, whatever it is, without any delay," she said, noting that the election is just 11 days away.
In July, after a months-long investigation, Comey said the FBI would not recommend criminal charges against Clinton for her handling of classified documents and sensitive information while secretary of state.
But he sharply criticized the Democratic presidential nominee for being “extremely careless” with the material and said Clinton “should have known that an unclassified system was no place” for the conversations she engaged in.
Clinton declined to say whether she had spoken to Abedin about the matter.
"We've heard these rumors" about the possible Weiner connection, Clinton said. "We don't know what to believe."
