Poll: Respect for Law Enforcement Soars to Highest
Post# of 50561
A new Gallup poll found that three in four Americans (76 percent) say they have "a great deal" of respect for the police in their area, up 12 percent from last year.
That number is just one point below the high of 77 percent recorded in 1967.
Despite racial unrest across much of the country and the emergence of groups like Black Lives Matter, respect for local police increased among both whites and nonwhites.
80 percent of whites said they have a great deal of respect for police in their area, up 11 points from last year.
Meantime, 67 percent of nonwhites reported the same level of respect, an increase of 14 points from last year.
Respect for police remains highest among Republicans (86 percent) and conservatives (85 percent), but solid majorities of Democrats (68 percent) and liberals (71 percent) report the same level of respect.
The Gallup poll was conducted October 5 to 9, with a random sample of 1,017 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.
