Lefty, this one of us was not aborted: Preemie's Smile Lights Up the Internet
A beaming smile of a baby girl just days after her premature birth is lighting up the internet.
The picture - snapped two years ago - was shared recently by a Minnesota woman named Lauren Vinje.
"Our first daughter at five days old. 3 lbs. 14 oz., she was happy to be alive! This picture was one I looked at often to get me through the ups and downs of our NICU days. Life so precious," she wrote.
It started to go viral after a blog called Birth Without Fear re-posted it a few weeks ago along with an entry from Vinje. Her story, and her baby's ear-to-ear grin, is now being shared all over.
Little Freya, who is healthy and will soon turn two years old, was born in Nov. 2014 after her mother began showing signs of preeclampsia at 34 weeks.
Vinje wrote about the harrowing delivery process, which first started with labor being induced. Doctors later opted for an emergency C-section when Freya's heart rate started dropping.
They later learned that the baby's cord was abnormally short and was wrapped around her neck, so a vaginal delivery would probably have been fatal.
The now-famous photo was taken five days after the birth. Vinje told ABC News she wanted to share the story and photo to give support and comfort to other parents of premature babies.
"I had a feeling it would put some smiles on a few people's faces," she said, recalling that Freya smiled for the camera right after being asked: "Should we send a picture to Daddy?"
