Why warm up?
Whether you want to increase your endurance for a workout, a marathon, a local run or a game, you need to prepare your body beforehand. In order to optimize performance, you need to make sure your limbs are warmed up and supple. Add a high performance beverage sports drink and you can start off any training regime on the right footing.
A warm up can make sure that you your body is prepared to meet the demands of strenuous activity. It increases blood circulation and directs blood to muscles besides lubricating joints. This way the body is less prone to injury and you do not have trouble breathing during a workout.
What makes a good warm up exercise?
A good warm up has two essential components. The first is a general or simple warm up which increases the body’s core temperature and which allows muscles to contract without undue stress or strain. A specific warm up on the other hand, triggers neurotransmitters in the body which prepare the muscles to endure the stress that long distance runs or rigorous workouts can cause.
If you are a runner then a general warm up for you would be a slow run. The exercise will take about 10 minutes to prepare your legs and muscles for a full on sprint. Nervous jogging for half a minute before a race or marathon will not do the trick. Experienced sprinters can take up to 30 minutes to warm up before a big race but this can be a challenge for older runners.
Once you have completed your short jog, start on your specific warm up. This can be done by making short and repetitive movements that can take your main joints through a complete range of motion. One of the exercises you can do is forward/backward arm swings and side to side trunk rotations. Start with gentler movements and then when you have the hang of it, increase intensity until your limbs start to burn a little. Continue for 5 minutes and then start your run or workout.
To get the blood really flowing, start your warm ups with high performance beverages that have zero sugar content.
