PASADENA, Md., Oct. 16, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Lake Shore Pet Hospital would like to raise awareness about the importance of senior pet care. Some pet owners might not be aware that their pet already falls into the age range of a senior, and the Pasadena veterinarian hopes to raise both awareness and the standards of care provided to aging pets.
The age at which a pet is considered a senior varies depending upon the type of animal, breed and its weight/size. Cats and small dogs are considered geriatric starting at around age seven or eight. Due to the aging process, larger breeds of dogs are already considered seniors by the age of five or six years old. As pets age, they tend to require more care. Older pets are at an increased risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, organ failure, arthritis and other conditions. Pet owners can be proactive by taking their senior pet to the veterinarian more frequently. This can help to ensure that health problems are caught early so that they can be immediately addressed. Some of the most common changes in pet health needs as they age include alterations to their diet and nutrition, adjustments to their exercise regimen, and the need for specialized accommodations in the home. Pet owners can do their part by bringing senior pets in for an exam twice per year. Pasadena veterinary clinic Lake Shore Pet Hospital will check for issues with the pet’s coat, eyes, ears, skin and teeth. They will look for the signs and symptoms of deeper issues and make treatment recommendations for optimal health. Lake Shore Pet Hospital also offers comprehensive diagnostic tests including blood work panels to check cell counts, thyroid health and internal organ functioning. They can also conduct a urinalysis, blood pressure screening, and electrocardiogram (EKG) radiographs to look for osteoarthritis and heart disease. In addition to these key tests, Lake Shore Pet Hospital also performs vaccinations and pet dental care to enhance pet health and wellbeing. The ultimate goal of this Pasadena veterinarian is to promote a high quality of life for pets, even as they age. Trevor W. Ashley, DVM says, “We strive to educate pet owners and bring a high level of senior pet wellness to animals in the Pasadena, Maryland area. Senior pets are at heightened risk for numerous conditions, but with vigilance and preventative care, they can stay healthy and comfortable through their golden years.” Lake Shore Pet Hospital is located at 4193 Mountain Road in Pasadena, Maryland.
