Dakota: IMHO all real shares are held by longs so the activity you see on a daily basis is mostly abusive naked short selling and wash trading done by the MM's to simulate volume and walk down the price. There may be some trading but it is minimal. Some of the market makers will miss mark a short sale as a long but not nearly as often as they did in the past when Credit Suisse and others were fined millions for that. What you also must remember is that many of us have markers (not real shares) in our accounts and the last thing the MM's want to do is buy back air shares.
