INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Three years ago, IMPD Officer Rod Bradway lost
his life trying to save a woman and her toddler during a domestic dispute.
Now Bradway's mother Sheri s wrapping her arms around the families of
other fallen officers. She's doing it with her love of quilting.
Her project is called "A Quilt for Mother's Tears" and provides hand-sewn
quilts to mothers who have lost children in the line of duty.
"It was my way of putting my grief into the quilt I made for Rod. That was the
original mother's tears. The Northwest District now has that. That was just
where I could put my tears. When I went to Washington in May 2014, there
really is nothing given to a mother to say that they honor their sacrifice. So
that's how it came about," she said.
Volunteers across the country help make the quilts. Each includes the
department patch, seven stars for the seven days a week the officer is
on duty and an eagle for the pride an officer feels in uniform. Since the
Bradways started the project, more than 300 quilts have been given away.
Bradway brought a quilt intended for the mother of an officer
killed in the line of duty in Seaside, Oregon.
She calls it a labor of love. "Each quilter that gets the kit that she
works on, she has a piece that says exactly how that officer was
killed and if he has a family left. So she becomes part of that quilt
in honoring that mother."
"It's a way of me as a mother telling them they're not alone."
This weekend you can join in at the Foundation Auction, the project's
fundraiser, at the Pike Performing Arts Center at 1:00 pm. Fifty-four
quilts will be auctioned, along with special items like Colts tickets
and a Chicago trip giveaway
