$RGBP Dr. Ma has been studying cytokines, particularly the IL-10 and IL-12 family of interleukins, for more than 20 years in many aspects of their regulation and immunobiology in various inflammatory autoimmune and tumor-immune models. Dr. Ma's group first identified a novel function of the Crohn's disease-associated NOD2 mutation and uncovered the mechanisms by which IL-12 induces strong cell-mediated immune responses against various malignancies. He was also the first to identify a novel, non-chemokine activity of CCL5 in the generation and function of myeloid-derived suppressor cells and tumor-associated macrophages in the regulation of immune responses against breast cancer/mammary tumor.
