Los Angeles – Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has cut Democratic hopeful Hillary Clinton's lead by 7 points in California, though she still remains a considerable 17 points ahead, according to a survey published Tuesday.
According to The Field Poll, the Democratic leader now has the support of 50 percent of voters compared with 33 percent for Trump, while last July, the last time this poll was published, voter preference was 50 percent for Clinton and only 26 percent for the magnate.
By population segments, 61 percent of Latinos, 77 percent of African Americans and 44 percent of white non-Hispanics would vote for Clinton, while Trump would get the votes of 21 percent of Hispanics, 13 percent of African Americans and 38 percent of whites.
"Clinton holds a three-to-one advantage among the state's Latino voters, is favored six-to-one among African Americans and has a greater than two-to-one lead among Asian Americans. However, among white non-Hispanics Clinton's lead over Trump is just six points," Mark DiCamillo, director of The Field Poll, said Tuesday.
DiCamillo said "the proportion of likely voters holding an unfavorable view of the former First Lady has also increased ten points over the same period."
"More Californians now view her unfavorably (53%) than favorably (47%), a reversal from July. In addition, a very large proportion of the state's electorate (41%) now reports having a 'very unfavorable' opinion of Clinton," the pollster said.
By contrast, "Trump is showing some improvement in his still very negative standing with California voters," the state with the largest number of electoral votes with 55.
Some 31 percent of potential voters now see the Republican in a positive light, a change from previous surveys in which less than one out of every four voters had a favorable opinion of Trump.
With regard to the other candidates, 6 percent of voter preference goes to Jill Stein, candidate of the Green Party, while the nominee for the Libertarian Party, Gary Johnson, is currently favored by 5 percent.
The survey, taken between Sept. 7-13 in English and Spanish among 1,800 registered California voters, also found that 6 percent of respondents are still undecided, 8 percentage points less than last July.
Nationwide, according to a survey by NBC News and SurveyMonkey, Clinton tops Trump by 5 points for a total voter preference of 50 percent and 45 percent, respectively.
