Writing that NFL players' national anthem protests are now fueling a debate about patriotism, Time magazine featured a kneeling Colin Kaepernick on its latest cover.
The San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback has said he will kneel for the national anthem before each game this season over "oppression" of minorities and violence by police officers.
His protest has led other NFL players to join him. On Monday night, three Philadelphia Eagles players raised their fists during the anthem.
Meantime, Kaepernick said this week that he's received some death threats in recent weeks, but is "not too concerned." He argued that any act of violence against him would only prove his larger point.
"If something like that were to happen, you’ve proved my point and it will be loud and clear for everyone why it happened, and that would move this movement forward at a greater speed than what it is even now," he said.
He also spoke out against the killing of an unarmed black man named Terence Crutcher in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
The shooting, captured on tape by a police helicopter, shows a female white officer open fire after Crutcher appeared to have his hands up. Police later said no gun was found at the scene.
"This is a perfect example of what this is about,” Kaepernick said. "It will be very telling about what happens to the officer."
Police have said PCP was found in Crutcher's vehicle and that the officer suspected he was under the influence of the drug.
An attorney for Officer Betty Shelby maintained that Crutcher failed to obey numerous commands from the officers and that he repeatedly reached in his pocket.
Donald Trump weighed in on the situation yesterday, criticizing the officer's actions and saying that she may have "choked."
