And now Indiana wins College Soccer Championship.1to 0
Against Georgetown today.
The Indiana University men’s soccer program won its eighth NCAA championship Sunday.
Nikita Kotlov’s goal in the 64th minute lifted Indiana over Georgetown 1-0 in the championship game at Hoover, Ala.
Indiana survived an 89th-minute shot by the Hoyas’ Ian Christianson, whose attempt went off the crossbar and bounced right to IU goalkeeper Luis Soffner. A shot by Georgetown’s Andy Riemer hit the crossbar in the 69th minute.
The 16th-seeded Hoosiers (16-5-3) were the lowest seed to reach the College Cup since the NCAA introduced that format in 2003.
No. 3 seed Georgetown, which won a semifinal over Maryland on penalty kicks, finished 19-4-3.
The Hoosiers reached the College Cup by beating No. 1 seed Notre Dame 2-1 and defending NCAA champion North Carolina 1-0 in a span of six days.
Then they twice won 1-0 in the final four, over Creighton in a semifinal and then over Georgetown.
“This is unbelievable,” Indiana coach Todd Yeagley said in an ESPNU interview. “These players, this program. There’s nothing like Indiana soccer.”
Indiana’s other NCAA championships came in 1982, 1983, 1988, 1998, 1999, 2003 and 2004. The first six were won by coach Jerry Yeagley, father of Todd.
The record for NCAA titles is 10 by St. Louis, which won all of them between 1959 and 1973.
