Cataract surgery does not remove the cornea. It removes the lens. Typically a small incision is made in the cornea, and then the lens is broken by various means (some use sound waves) and removed. A new lens is implanted. Antibiotic eye drops are used to prevent infection. After the danger of infection is over, when the incision has healed. people should NOT need to be using eye drops unless they also have another condition like chronic dry eye.
Friends who have had the surgery say that their vision is much better. Often they don't need glasses except for reading. Newer implants (lenses) being developed are designed to mimic natural lens function, so that people will be able to see both at a distance and close up without glasses.
My doctor says that if people can wait about 5 years to have the surgery, the technology is going to be MUCH better and people will be impatient to get to have the surgery, because it will give them the vision of a 20-year-old again.
