Friends who have had the surgery say that their vision is much better. Often they don't need glasses except for reading. Newer implants (lenses) being developed are designed to mimic natural lens function, so that people will be able to see both at a distance and close up without glasses.
My doctor says that if people can wait about 5 years to have the surgery, the technology is going to be MUCH better and people will be impatient to get to have the surgery, because it will give them the vision of a 20-year-old again.
