President Obama may be about to transfer some of the most dangerous terrorists at the Guantanamo Bay facility as part of his drive to close the detention camps before his term ends.
Five members of a group labeled "high risk" and dubbed the "Karachi 6" were approved for transfer by Obama Administration officials. Two have already left Gitmo for the United Arab Emirates.
Thomas Joscelyn, Senior Fellow of the non-partisan Foundation for Defense of Democracies, said that the men received training in Afghanistan and were close to senior al Qaeda leaders and appeared committed to the cause. He said there's no reason to believe that has changed in the intervening years.
Of 161 detainees transferred from Guantanamo Bay since 2009, nine have returned to terrorism. White House spokesman Josh Earnest said the number show the administration's track record is better than their predecessor.
