Hero cop released from hospital after cleaver attack

The hero cop who was hacked in the face after tackling a meat cleaver-wielding lunatic was released from a Manhattan hospital Friday afternoon with a 6-inch wound stretching from his left temple to his chin.

More than a hundred NYPD officers gathered at Bellevue Hospital clapped and cheered for Detective Brian O’Donnell, who was off duty at the time of the chaotic encounter in Midtown Thursday.

A somber-looking O’Donnell waved and thanked supporters as he was pushed out of the hospital in a wheelchair with his family by his side.

Career criminal Akram Joudeh, 32, sliced O’Donnell in the head with the cleaver after O’Donnell tackled him as cops were chasing Joudeh at the start of the evening rush hour.

Prior to the cleaver attack, Joudeh grew enraged and started swinging the large blade at officers after he tried to remove a boot that had been placed on his car.

He is remarkably in good shape today as he walked out the door,” Detectives Endowment Association president Michael Palladino said of O’Donnell. “Of course he has a very deep laceration. He has one operation, but the real extent of the damage we do not know yet.”

Palladino added, “This detective has a reputation that precedes him as someone who likes to get involved. This is a true example [of] you are never really off duty in the city.”

A cop who works with O’Donnell, a 16-year veteran who works out of the 19th Precinct, described him as “a great guy, a great detective … [what he did] it makes us proud.”

The mayhem ended when officers fired a hail of bullets at Joudeh, critically wounding him. He is recovering at Bellevue Hospital.
