A New York Times op-ed is drawing attention this morning for branding Missouri as the "Shoot-Me State" in light of the passage of a new law that loosens gun restrictions.
The so-called "constitutional carry" measure, which takes effect Jan. 1, allows most adults to carry concealed weapons without a permit, FoxNews.com reported.

The legislation also would create a "stand-your-ground" right, meaning people in the Show Me State don't have a duty to retreat from danger any place they are legally entitled to be present.
The Times' editorial board called it "an alarming victory for the gun lobby" that represents a "wholesale retreat from gun safety in the state." The column also slammed Donald Trump for supporting the NRA on looser gun laws, calling it "one of the most pathetic measures yet of his pandering, when he should be leading, on an issue of vital importance to the public."
The Republican-led Legislature used its supermajority this week to override a veto from Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon in order to approve the measure.
