The Confederate sniper that shot Gen. Sedgewick was using a Whitworth rifle.
Naturally, many in the Union Army were grief stricken by Sedgewick's death but it was also a terrible blow to Confederate Gen. Jeb Stuart. The two had been very good friends before the war. Stuart died three days later from a stomach wound received at Yellow Tavern.
