IRS refuses to inform taxpayers when illegals steal their identity; new IG report will infuriate you
Even though the Internal Revenue Service had discovered that over one million American citizens and taxpayers had their Social Security Numbers stolen by illegal immigrants, the agency didn’t bother to tell anyone of what they found, not even the taxpayers whose identity was stolen.
A new report from the IRS Inspector General’s office reveals the shocking truth that the IRS was told at least five years ago that it needs to inform Americans when their identity has been stolen by an immigrant who is using Social Security Numbers to illegally get a job. The report even notes that a pilot program was created to do just that but Obama’s IRS bosses shut the program down without finding out if it would work properly, the Washington Times reported on Tuesday.
This means that at least a million American taxpayers went months or years not knowing that their personal information was stolen. That was months or years that innocent Americans had their credit histories severely compromised.
But the IRS had all the information in hand when these illegals would file tax returns using the stolen information. Since 2011 the agency found over 1.1 million illegals using stolen Social Security Numbers but never told American taxpayers of that theft.
“It is stunning that the IRS has chosen to aid and abet identity thieves for so long instead of protecting the innocent victims of the theft,” Senator Daniel Coats, an Indiana Republican, said upon the release of the IG’s report.
Senator Coats have been a bitter critic of Obama’s IRS saying that it is clear that the IRS is more interested in protecting illegal immigrants than they are in protecting legal citizens.
“All of us can agree that victims need to know that they’re victims, and need to know that an agency of the federal government, whether it’s IRS or whether it’s SSA, or both, ought to have some ability to talk to each other,” Coats said.
But the IRS countered critics saying that it was actually illegal for them to tell legal citizens that their information has been stolen because the IRS isn’t allowed to dole out information on taxpayers even if that taxpayer is an illegal immigrant.
Obama’s IRS chief John G. Koskinen has insisted that it would take an act of Congress and a new set of laws to allow him to change the status quo.
In fact, Koskinen has insisted he is legally obligated to file the tax returns of illegals.
Of course, this is the same Obama IRS chief who has repeatedly lied to Congress about destroying government records and erasing emails and has been threatened with impeachment.
But the Inspector General insisted that the IRS needs to change its ways, law or no. “The lack of a formal process to ensure that the SSA is notified of income not associated with an innocent taxpayer is problematic because this notification is essential to ensure that victims’ Social Security benefits are not affected,” the report concludes.
