To be sure, in a politically divided country, Republicans may think we are on the wrong path because of what Democrats are doing, and vice versa.
And there's the flaw in attaching too much weight to 'wrong direction right direction' polls. Take a look at the historical record, particularly Nov, of '12. http://www.gallup.com/poll/1669/general-mood-country.aspx How'd that work out for the GOP?
Interestingly, the bleak outlook from respondents for the country doesn’t seem to affect the outlook for their own families. In the same poll, 76 percent of respondents said things for their family were generally headed in the right direction.

Most of the article is a combo of wishful righty thinking and an argument for sticking a thumb in the eye of the 'establishment', WITHOUT regard to consequences.
That's neither a governing strategy nor, thus far, much of a campaign strategy. Another thing over-weighted?
Trump winning the GOP nomination. He did that with positions that do not play as well on a national stage, among a much, much wider and more diverse electorate. Which is what we are seeing play out.
