"Up until that date the South had the hope of getting help from some of the European powers"
They could either free the slaves within their Confederacy or have a major victory on Union soil. They chose Gettysburg first given that they were on the offensive and winning due to the inept leadership of the Union army et al. By the time they freed the slaves..it was too late for any support.
But yet again....the civil war was fought mainly due to protective tarrifs and the disenfranchised vote that the North was attempting to pull off. The cotton gin also contributed given the dramatic increase in production. Further....all those fields were planted with cotton and not corn(etc)....this led to a starving military down the road of war. Slavery was on it's way out....that was a given.....the South knew that as well as the North. If it were not for special interests in the North exploiting the South through protective tarrifs.......none of this would have happened.
Very little to do with the abomination of slavery...and everything to do about something called ..... "Protective Tarrifs."
