Louisiana Governor & former Senator - both Democrats - praise Trump for ‘shining spotlight’ on flood

Last week, prior to Donald Trump’s Louisiana visit, the anti-Trump media had fun mischaracterizing remarks made by LA. Governor John Bel Edwards.

If you watched any of the mainstreamers, you were under the impression that the Governor told Trump not to come. Like so much of what those outlets report, that wasn’t exactly true.

What Edwards said was:

“We welcome him to Louisiana, but not for a photo-op. Instead we hope he’ll consider volunteering or making a sizable donation to the LA Flood Relief Fund to help the victims of the storm.”

Somehow, the fact that Edwards was (probably legitimately) a bit concerned about the possibility of a quick political stunt turned into “Louisiana Governor says stay out.”

On Sunday he not only corrected the press, but he also praised Trump’s visit as a positive development that “shined a spotlight” on the destruction in his state.

As the Hill reports, Edwards appeared on CNN, where he said the following:

“I didn’t dismiss his trip as a photo-op. Before he came down, I said we welcome him here, we want him to be helpful. And we hope that it doesn’t turn into a mere photo-op.”

Edwards said Trump’s visit to the state was positive for Louisiana.

“Because it helped to shine a spotlight on Louisiana and on the dire situation that we have here, that it was helpful,” he said.

“I also appreciated the good phone call, the conversation that I had with Gov. [Mike] Pence [R-Ind.], who was sincere and genuine when he called, and we spoke for a long time on Friday morning about their desire to be helpful,” he said about Trump’s running mate.
