IR.94 Video Telephony Benchmark Study & Comparison with Multiple OTT Video Chat Apps

This industry conducted an independent analysis of IR.94 and how it compares with multiple OTT video chat applications, including FaceTime, fring, Google Hangout, imo, ooVoo, Skype, Tango, and Viber. We conducted more than 200 tests involving different combinations of voice or video applications, test procedures, and network conditions. Spirent Communications provided its Chromatic test platform for the video performance analysis and its Quantum Battery Life Measurement System to measure the current drain with the voice and video telephony/chat applications that we tested. We used the Accuver XCAL drive test tool and XCAP post-processing software to evaluate the impact these applications had on the network as well as the underlying network conditions during the tests. Unlike VoLTE, the performance benefits of IR.94 are not obvious, especially when compared with Skype and FaceTime. The results also depend a lot on how the operator has implemented IR.94 and the operator has a lot of flexibility in that regard. Based on the KPIs we analyzed in our study, we give Skype the edge over FaceTime, but ironically Skype seemed to perform the best on an iPhone 6 Plus smartphone. LTE is spectrally efficient, but IR.94 consumes a lot of bandwidth, although not nearly as much as some of the OTT video chat applications. An operator will need to balance the use of a guaranteed bit rate (GBR) and QCI=2 with the impact that these IR.94 features will have on its network. IR.94 does differentiate in other ways, for example it is included as part of the native dialer on the phone. Additionally, the voice portion of the IR.94 video call uses QCI=1, thus allowing basic voice communications to continue unscathed even if the video component suffers. There is a tradeoff, however, which we discuss. Unless things change, IR.94 will remain a niche application for the foreseeable future. Results for the commercial smartphones that we tested were in-line with the vendorsupplied solutions but additional testing is required to ensure full consistency of results with the vendor-supplied solutions. The testing took place in late June and early July in Northern and Southern California, and included the operator's VoLTE, 3G HD voice service, and Skype Voice for comparison purposes. Consistent with all of our previous VoLTE-related studies, we collaborated with Spirent Communications and Accuver Americas. Spirent provided us with its Nomad User Experience Analytics System and engineering support to conduct the call quality tests using the industry accepted POLQA algorithm. Accuver Americas provided us with its XCAL-M data collection tool and XCAP post processing software to analyze the lower layer interactions of the smartphones with the cellular network. We look forward to working with both companies on future studies, including more test campaigns related to VoLTE and RCS. For these tests we used three different smartphones - a Galaxy S6 (Samsung chipset and VoLTE solution), a Galaxy S5 (Qualcomm chipset and VoLTE solution) and an iPhone 5 smartphone. We used the three different smartphones to see if the results varied across platforms. All of our tests involved mobile originated and mobile terminated calls. Generally, we were stationary when we conducted these tests but for purposes of testing handovers, we did interject a bit of mobility into the study (hence the peculiar reference to the little red wagon in the title of the report). We primarily used the VoLTE, 3G HD voice service, and Skype Voice tests to collect baseline results which we could use to compare with the VoWi-Fi results, although these tests also proved useful when it came to identifying potential interoperability issues. Cutting to the chase, our summary-level conclusion is that VoWi-Fi is as good or as bad as the underlying Wi-Fi network. We obtained results which suggest the typical consumer would never notice the difference when switching from VoLTE to VoWi-Fi, let along the actual handover itself. Conversely, we also documented results which weren't as favorable. In many, but not all, of these instances, we believe that other factors were involved. IR.94 Video Telephony Benchmark Study & Comparison with Multiple OTT Video Chat Apps

This industry conducted an independent analysis of IR.94 and how it compares with multiple OTT video chat applications, including FaceTime, fring, Google Hangout, imo, ooVoo, Skype, Tango, and Viber. We conducted more than 200 tests involving different combinations of voice or video applications, test procedures, and network conditions. Spirent Communications provided its Chromatic test platform for the video performance analysis and its Quantum Battery Life Measurement System to measure the current drain with the voice and video telephony/chat applications that we tested. We used the Accuver XCAL drive test tool and XCAP post-processing software to evaluate the impact these applications had on the network as well as the underlying network conditions during the tests. Unlike VoLTE, the performance benefits of IR.94 are not obvious, especially when compared with Skype and FaceTime. The results also depend a lot on how the operator has implemented IR.94 and the operator has a lot of flexibility in that regard. Based on the KPIs we analyzed in our study, we give Skype the edge over FaceTime, but ironically Skype seemed to perform the best on an iPhone 6 Plus smartphone. LTE is spectrally efficient, but IR.94 consumes a lot of bandwidth, although not nearly as much as some of the OTT video chat applications. An operator will need to balance the use of a guaranteed bit rate (GBR) and QCI=2 with the impact that these IR.94 features will have on its network. IR.94 does differentiate in other ways, for example it is included as part of the native dialer on the phone. Additionally, the voice portion of the IR.94 video call uses QCI=1, thus allowing basic voice communications to continue unscathed even if the video component suffers. There is a tradeoff, however, which we discuss. Unless things change, IR.94 will remain a niche application for the foreseeable future. Although carrier aggregation has been deployed since mid-2013, very few chipset suppliers fully support the feature while device availability is further concentrated on a single supplier. Thanks to some marquee wins, the status quo is quickly changing. The results for the three vendor-supplied solutions that we tested (Intel, Qualcomm and Samsung) were largely the same for many of the test cases - perhaps an indication that the industry needs to move away from conformance-based testing with static scheduling. With more challenging conditions (lower SNR) the platform delivered measurably higher throughput but the performance advantage wasn't as great as we've observed in prior tests. Results for the commercial smartphones that we tested were in-line with the vendorsupplied solutions but additional testing is required to ensure full consistency of results with the vendor-supplied solutions. This industry conducted an independent performance analysis of T-Mobile's Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWi-Fi) service. The testing took place in late June and early July in Northern and Southern California, and included the operator's VoLTE, 3G HD voice service, and Skype Voice for comparison purposes. Consistent with all of our previous VoLTE-related studies, we collaborated with Spirent Communications and Accuver Americas. Spirent provided us with its Nomad User Experience Analytics System and engineering support to conduct the call quality tests using the industry accepted POLQA algorithm. Accuver Americas provided us with its XCAL-M data collection tool and XCAP post processing software to analyze the lower layer interactions of the smartphones with the cellular network. We look forward to working with both companies on future studies, including more test campaigns related to VoLTE and RCS. For these tests we used three different smartphones - a Galaxy S6 (Samsung chipset and VoLTE solution), a Galaxy S5 (Qualcomm chipset and VoLTE solution) and an iPhone 5 smartphone. We used the three different smartphones to see if the results varied across platforms. All of our tests involved mobile originated and mobile terminated calls. Generally, we were stationary when we conducted these tests but for purposes of testing handovers, we did interject a bit of mobility into the study (hence the peculiar reference to the little red wagon in the title of the report). We primarily used the VoLTE, 3G HD voice service, and Skype Voice tests to collect baseline results which we could use to compare with the VoWi-Fi results, although these tests also proved useful when it came to identifying potential interoperability issues. Cutting to the chase, our summary-level conclusion is that VoWi-Fi is as good or as bad as the underlying Wi-Fi network. We obtained results which suggest the typical consumer would never notice the difference when switching from VoLTE to VoWi-Fi, let along the actual handover itself. Conversely, we also documented results which weren't as favorable. In many, but not all, of these instances, we believe that other factors were involved.
