Donald Trump has gone all in on extremism, bigotry, and white nationalism. With the stunning news that Trump is making the head of Breitbart News Stephen Bannon his campaign chief, there can be no doubt about where the Republican nominee stands.
As Trump's numbers plummet among women and minorities, Trump has turned to the head of a website that essentially defines modern bigotry. One only needs to scroll through the website's headlines to understand the scope of the problem.
In fact, many conservatives were appalled that Trump hired Bannon, with a former Breitbart spokesperson even telling Media Matters that Bannon is a "pathological liar."
Meanwhile, only the Trump sycophants (and an RNC spokesman) voiced approval. Trump is signalling that he is what he always was: a bigoted extremist who enjoys the company and attention of other bigoted extremists.
White nationalists are very excited
There actually is one other group that really loves Donald Trump bringing on Breitbart News head Stephen Bannon: white nationalists. This comes after a year of dalliances between the Trump campaign and white nationalists.
In fact, some even describe Breitbart News itself as a white nationalist website. Joe Strupp spoke to experts about right-wing extremism in the United States, and they explained that "the line between Trump and the extreme right has just gone from fuzzy to virtually non-existent." And yet, some mainstream outlets still downplayed or even ignored all of these connections.
Trump's "pivots" are Lucy pulling the football
In a rally Thursday night, Donald Trump said that he regretted some things -- but never indicated what those things were. Nonetheless, media were off to the races to cheer another fake Trump pivot. One Fox editor praised Trump for "almost" apologizing. Joe Scarborough, who has repeatedly whitewashed Trump's extremism, even said that the "screaming, racially insensitive" Trump is "just a character he's playing."
