US goalkeeper Hope Solo says Zika-related jeers from Brazilian fans don't bother her. While Solo didn't have any saves on her stat sheet, she still gets the win in a shutout game.
Aug 3, 2016; Belo Horizonte, Brazil; Team USA goalkeeper Hope Solo (1) celebrates after the game against New Zealand at Estadio Mineirao.
Most recently, Solo drew criticism from citizens of Olympics host Brazil after posting Instagram pictures of a large amount of insect spray and herself wearing protective netting. The Americans are also vying to be the first team to win at the Olympics after winning the World Cup.
The 35-year-old World Cup victor and two-time Olympic gold medalist said she was not bothered by the crowd noise in Belo Horizonte's Estadio Mineirao and gave a calm explanation of her thoughts on the matter ahead of Saturday's Group G clash with France. To her credit, she held no ill will toward the supporters, downright praising them after the game saying, "I'm glad the fans had fun". After arriving in Brazil, she blamed the USA media for being "really tough" on the people of Brazil, then tried to praise them as nice, genuine and warm people. "I thought we moved the ball against a very determined team". The chants aren't going away any time soon, but Solo said she can deal with that.
The 35-year-old told Sports Illustrated in February she was seriously considering not taking part in the Games due to her plans to have children with National Football League player and husband Jerramy Stevens.
"I think that's something hopefully they will put behind them and realise that Hope has apologised to the Brazilian people". As I said, we haven't been to Rio yet; I have no idea what to expect in Rio. The United States defeated South Africa 1-0.
"I don't know why, but we like to sensationalise everything and scare people and then... when the games go on, everything goes on as planned, ends up being a attractive tournament".
Having said that....are you really sure you want to be using the ZIKA VIRUS as a selling point of your country? Obviously a lot can change in three years, but based on that answer, it sure seems like Solo wants to be the American backstop in France.
