Poll: Voters give Democrats edge to lead Congress

More American voters want the Democratic Party to lead Congress than its Republican counterpart, which has controlled both the House and the Senate since the 2014 midterm elections, according to the latest results of a national NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll of registered voters out Friday.

While 43 percent said they wanted Republicans to maintain their hold on Congress after the November elections, 47 percent said they would prefer to see Democrats return to power in both chambers for the first time since the tea party wave of 2010 swept the GOP into the majority the next year.

The same poll showed voters divided on the question in June, with 46 percent each expressing support for either party to control Congress. But in the May survey, voters also indicated that they preferred a Democratic-controlled Congress by a similar four-point margin of 48 percent to 44 percent.

A Fox News poll conducted at the end of June found that 46 percent preferred Democrats in charge, while 41 percent favored Republicans maintaining their advantage.

The latest survey was conducted from July 31-Aug. 3, surveying 800 registered voters with an overall margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
