So Canada's head of state isn't our Prime Minister, but rather the Queen of England (also the Queen of Canada)....of course she can't be bothered to sign all the bills into laws so the Prime Minister appoints a Governor General who acts on the Queen's behalf....its ceremonial and no GG has ever not signed a law passed by our House of Commons and Senate, but in theory the GG could.
So are we "free" from England....yes and no. We have our own Constitution and Charter of Rights and Freedoms...but the Queen is still considered the head of state in a ceremonial capacity.
Canada is definitely more left than the US, but not as far left as many European countries....we're in between the two. We don't have free university, but it is subsidized, our health care is a single pay system run by the government but unlike Europe many procedures are now being privatized.
About the only place you're going to find pure socialism is in a country like Israel if you live on a kibbutz.
