Brother of Slain 'Kim Kardashian of Pakistan' Arrested For 'Honor Killing'
The brother of a slain Pakistani social media celebrity -- dubbed "The Kim Kardashian of Pakistan" -- has confessed to strangling his sister to death as she slept, in response to "shameful" photos she posted on Facebook, police said Sunday.
Qandeel Baloch's brother, Waseem Azeem, committed the so-called honor killing for "family honor," police said. He was arrested Sunday.
Baloch recently attracted the disdain of conservatives in the country after she posted pictures online of herself with prominent Muslim cleric Mufti Adbul Qavi in a Karachi hotel room during the holy Islamic month of Ramadan. In one picture, she is wearing the cleric's fur-lined hat. After that incident, Baloch said she had received death threats and had asked the Interior Ministry for protection.
She was found dead on Saturday at her family home in the central city of Multan. Her brother, Waseem Azeem, was arrested Sunday.
Multan police chief Akram Azhar said Azeem will be charged with the killing and seek the "maximum punishment."
In Pakistan, murder carries a potential death sentence, and the honor killing charge will make Azeem ineligible for a family pardon.
Baloch became famous after posting a series of social media posts that were considered scandalous by conservative Pakistani standards. Among her posts was a racy video she danced in for a popular rap song that went viral.
She also recently promised to perform a public striptease if the Pakistani cricket team won a major tournament.
Nearly 1,000 women are killed by close relatives in Pakistan each year for violating conservative norms on love and marriage, according to The Associated Press.
