Matt Damon Calls for Massive Australia-Style Gun Confiscation in U.S

Actor Matt Damon said over the weekend he wishes that a massive confiscation of guns could happen in the United States.

Damon made the remarks in an interview in Australia during his tour to promote his new movie "Jason Bourne."

"You guys did it here in one fell swoop and I wish that could happen in my country, but it’s such a personal issue for people that we cannot talk about it sensibly," said Damon, referring to the sweeping gun control measures enacted in Australia in 1996.

The 45-year-old Hollywood mega-star lamented that people get "so emotional" about the issue and claimed that supporters of the Second Amendment won't even discuss "not selling AK-47s to people on terror watchlists."

"I don't know what needs to happen. Obviously mass shootings aren't gonna do it," he said.

Australia's laws were changed after a gunman killed 35 people at a resort in Tasmania. The country implemented a massive buy-back of firearms, banned private sales and said that anyone wishing to own a gun would need a "genuine reason" to have one beyond self-defense.

The gun ban is often held up by the left as a model that should be used here to stop mass shootings. Others have argued that a massive gun confiscation program would not work in the U.S.
