Quarterback Andrew Luck signed a six-year, $140 million contract extension with the Indianapolis Colts, making him the highest paid player in the National Football League.
Colts owner Jim Irsay announced the agreement Wednesday on Twitter. The deal will keep Luck, 26, under contract through 2021. It surpasses the five-year, $110 million pact the Green Bay Packers gave quarterback Aaron Rodgers in 2013.
The Colts selected Luck out of Stanford University with the No. 1 pick in the 2012 draft, where he became the successor to the face of the franchise, quarterback Peyton Manning. In four seasons, Luck has helped the team to the playoffs three times, and is one of just four players to throw at least 100 touchdown passes this early in his career.
The most important number in NFL contracts is the guaranteed money, because teams can release players and not be responsible for the remainder of the agreement. Luck is guaranteed $87 million as part of this deal, according to ESPN, eclipsing the previous NFL record of $65 million guaranteed for quarterbacks Eli Manning of the Giants and Philip Rivers of the Charger
