Internet streaming services are pushing the traditional broadcast sector in their support for Ultra HD.

Speaking at the SES Ultra HD conference in London, Thomas Wrede, VP Reception Systems, SES said he was impressed at how the big three TV manufacturers, Sony, Samsung and LG, we’re now marketing high dynamic range to the end consumer.

“The OTT guys are there, they are broadcasting programmes and are co operating with the manufacturers. That puts pressure on us here, because the consumers are buying those TV sets.”
Wrede has previously expressed concerns that while the traditional broadcasters are busy discussing which standards to implement, the streamers are simply going ahead and launching services.

“We’ve endorsed some standards such as those from the DVB but we have 8 or 9 companies that are fighting for attention for what I think the DVB will allow as a toolbox,” he said.

Across all satellite operators there are currently 33 unique channels, including demos, across 10 satellite operators.
