2016: The Year DVDs Died…
by Luke on June 4, 2016 in News
DVDsOne more nail was just pounded in the heart of DVD sales this year. DVDs have suffered a long, slow death at the hands of online streaming thanks to Amazon Video and iTunes.

Now it looks like one more store has decided that the future of DVDs is now over. Best Buy has started to remodel stores and part of this remodel includes severely downsizing DVDs and moving them to the back of the store. Long gone are the days of row after row of DVDs and Blu-rays. Now DVDs and Blu-rays have just two rows of space in the far corner of the store.

So why is Best Buy downgrading their DVD selection and moving them to a less prime location? We don’t know for sure, but the likely reason is falling sales. In 2015 DVD and Blu-ray sales dropped 12% on top of the 28% drop in 2014. Even DVD rentals dropped 18.3% in 2014.

In 2015 online streaming for the first time took in more revenue than DVD and Blu-ray sales. Although they may not be gone completely in 2016 we are likely less than a year away from DVDs becoming something you find in specialty stores not major box stores as streaming is quickly replacing them. Yet like many things DVDs will probably live on for some time with online sales.

As more and more people buy streaming players and tablets the need for DVDs is quickly drying up.
