Thank you for contacting me to express concern about revelations that Hillary Clinton circumvented federal law by conducting official business as Secretary of State on an e-mail account that was not stored on State Department servers. I appreciate your views, which help inform and guide me in Congress.
I share your concern about Secretary Clinton’s decision to bypass federal laws because of—in her words—convenience. The fact that a high-ranking official conducting business with national security implications was storing e-mails on a server that lacks adequate security is deeply troubling.
Time and time again we’ve seen the Obama administration – which promised to be the most transparent in history – circumvent the law or spirit of the law. Secretary Clinton is being discussed as a candidate for the highest office in our country, and it’s clear she’s no more committed to openness and transparency than President Obama. At a minimum, any candidate for the presidency of the United States should have to follow the law at all times, not just when it's “convenient.”
Revelations about Secretary Clinton’s conduct came about because of an investigation by the House Select Committee on Benghazi, chaired by Congressman Trey Gowdy (SC). I am pleased the committee is conducting a thorough investigation and will continue to do so.
