Handlebar Race around Indy's Circle coming
Handlebar Race around Indy's Circle coming up.
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - A new kind of race is taking over Monument Circle Friday to celebrate the Month of May in downtown Indianapolis. More than 200 people will be facing off in the 100th Running Handlebar Hot Lap.
The race allows teams to pedal around the circle while competing in a single elimination bracket. Twenty-four teams representing organizations like the Indianapolis Colts, Eli Lilly and Rolls-Royce are vying for the championship title. The event includes pit stops, just like the Indy 500.
"The month of May is an exciting month for Indianapolis, especially this year with the 100th running," said Stephen Lindsay, co-owner of Handlebar Indy. "So, the Handlebar has partnered up with Downtown Indy and the Indianapolis 500 host committee to bring a very unique race to Indianapolis and it’s driving a lot of excitement."
Spectators are welcome to spend their lunch break on the circle to cheer on the teams.
"There will be several hundred people downtown on the circle," Lindsay said. "We have food trucks, we’ve got Indycars. Stephan Wilson, Indycar driver, will be there as well. So, it’ll be a good opportunity for people to come engage with the community, meet people from other companies, see Indycars and drivers and come have a good time on a Friday."
The race is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.
