Republicans have always gotten the blame for everything. I think it is because they approach a problem looking for a solution. Democrats approach a solution and look for a problem and then blame the problem on the Republicans. They are spectacular at this charade and the republicans have never figured this out.

If there is doubt about this, think about the "successful" war on poverty that has done little to elevate people out of poverty. Why is that? Because the democrats keep raising the bar on what it means to be impoverished. The "poor" in this country have it far better then the rich of most other countries. If we were to focus our attention on creating opportunities for the poor, limiting the number of new poor people entering the country and tapering the assistance provided such that the poor are encouraged to seek a path out of poverty, we would be so much better off. instead, we are constantly increasing the handouts and the ease of access to said handouts without any improvement on the two key aspects that need improving: Opportunities and reduced immigration at that economic level.

The late Cesar Chavez, founder of the farm worker's union, was a staunch advocate of anti-immigration. He always pointed out that if there is a constant flow of cheap labor coming in the country, the salaries of the lower and middle classes will be artificially held down. Labor costs (ie worker pay) are driven by a supply-demand model. The more cheap labor shows up at our borders, the less likely incomes for the folks already here will go up. Mr. Chavez was correct to point out that the people who are hurt most by illegal immigration are the immigrants who are already here. Their salaries will remain low. Their lives will continue to be taken for granted. Their families will continue to feel the burden that illegal immigration places on our country.

BTW, I am an immigrant myself. We waited two years as we worked through the legal paper work to come to this country. It was hard. But, the fact that it was hard is what made it worth it. We have a great country here. We need to recognize that immigration into this country is not a right, it is a privilege. A privilege that should be awarded to the best candidates who are ready to assimilate and who fit a need with regards to labor or labor expansion. If they are not here to help, they should not be allowed to stay.
