Re: cashclan #8600
Just so we are all on the same page, we participate in a global economy the benefits of which are cheap manufacturing, huge end markets for our goods and cheap products for our consumption. Without the global economy, we would have stagnated at the 1930s era standard of living. many of us would be well below the poverty line, yes, we would have manufacturing, but, most of us couldn't afford the products we built. Not very good times.

Then came WWII in which 25% of the working population lost their lives, Europe and Japan (our only industrial competitors at the time) lost all or most of their manufacturing capacity and the US was running strong and finally, and, there was a strong nationalistic pride among the citizens. Demand for american goods far exceeded our ability to provide. As such, we grew quite rich and everything seemed perfect. By 1970, the rest of the world caught up and we had to start competing globally for export markets. Having elevated our standard of living so much, our products became too expense for foreign markets. Furthermore, the citizens wanted to continue the trajectory of ever increasing standard of living wanting all the latest trinkets, gadgets, and luxuries. The only way this became possible was through international trade and foriegn labor exploitation. This was a win-win situation as the third world countries were able to grow revenue to pay for much needed improvements thereby creating a demand for american goods and Americans were able to acquire cheaper trinkets and toys.

The condition of the middle class was not brought on by greedy CEOs and nefarious foreign manufacturers, it was brought on by us Americans constantly wanting more for the fewer dollars we have. Not many realize this, but America manufactures more today then ever before. Yes, much of this is automated manufacturing, but, we have all seen this coming since the late 1700s. we had a 200 year warning.

Now, with that in mind, our collective happiness and success relies and being a strong player in the global market. And, since our corporations need protection internationally, the best way to project that power is to station troops around the world to help enforce, for better or for worse, our brand of justice and fairness. And I, as a patriotic American middle class white guy am very proud and thankful for what our soldiers do everyday to keep us and our markets safe.

JMHO.
