I know people still want to believe that it could

Yes, a portion of voters will stay home. I have my own personal dilemma as an independent that dislikes both candidates and may consider staying home for the first time since the mid 80s, but the minority populace in this country will not stay home.
The angry millions will vote Trump, without doubt, but the angrier scorned/insulted/mocked/put-down by Trump will vote against Trump, and they far outrank the angry millions.
Just look to the Republican party for additional proof. Cruz and Kasich are done, yet there is no unity. They fight on to get to a contested convention to try and usurp Trump. On the other side, Bernie Sanders camp stated yesterday that they will do everything in their power to stop Trump from winning in November. Progressive Sanders supporters will not all of a sudden switch to Trump. Once Sanders throws his full support behind Clinton, which he will, add up all of those votes and you have a route.
For Trump, he can keep shitting on Christie who has that stupid, dull look on his face as he stands behind holding his piss can.
