DIRECTV Cancels 4K MLB Broadcast (Again)
By Phillip Swann
Washington, D.C. (April 19, 2016) -- DIRECTV this evening announced it has to cancel tonight's 4K broadcast of the St. Louis Cardinals-Chicago Cubs game for technical reasons.
The satcaster was set last Friday to air the first 4K broadcast of a MLB game in the United States. But DIRECTV, which planned to air the game on its new live 4K channel, never showed it.
The next day, a company spokeswoman told TVPredictions.com that the broadcast had to be canceled because there was a problem with a "third party's field production truck."
DIRECTV's next scheduled 4K game was supposed to be tonight's contest between the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals. But a few hours before game time, DIRECTV issued a statement which said:
"To ensure the delivery of the best possible 4K Ultra HD signal for future live broadcasts, DIRECTV and MLB Network (which is producing the 4K games), will conduct an internal test of the signal during tonight's Cubs vs. Cardinals game. The game will be available to customers in HD, but not in 4K. Moving forward, we are committed to delivering the best experience for our customers."
The satcaster announced last week that it would air up to 25 MLB games this season on its new live 4K channel (channel 106), starting with last Friday night's contest between the Dodgers and Giants. That was supposed to mark the first 4K broadcast of a MLB game in the United States. SportsNet, a Canadian sports channel, is airing all 81 Toronto Blue Jays home games in 4K this season.
The decision to pull the Dodgers-Giants 4K broadcast did not sit well with viewers, some of whom upgraded both their programming package and satellite equipment to watch the game, according to subscriber posts at multiple social media sites and message forums. (To watch the 4K channel, DIRECTV requires subscribers to upgrade to one of its two most expensive programming plans, and get a HR54 HD DVR.)
The next scheduled 4K game on DIRECTV is April 29 between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox.
