CytoDyn Reports Complete Viral Load Suppression in HIV-Infected Patients for Up to 20 Months in PRO 140 Monotherapy Extension Study

VANCOUVER, Wash., April 18, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- CytoDyn Inc. (OTC.QB:CYDY), a biotechnology company focused on the development of new antibody therapies for combating human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, announces that 10 HIV-infected patients in its ongoing PRO 140 monotherapy extension study have achieved complete viral load suppression for at least 18 months, with several patients approaching 20 months.  This ongoing monotherapy study is an extension of the completed CDI-01 Phase 2b study that evaluated PRO 140 as a monotherapy in treatment-experienced patients with the R5 subtype of HIV.  One patient recently dropped out of the extension study following 17 months of full HIV viral load suppression.

CytoDyn believes that complete HIV virologic suppression through treatment with a once-weekly subcutaneous injection of PRO 140, rather than the daily dosing of multiple pills under the current standard-of-care HAART therapy, could present a significant market opportunity and patient benefit. CytoDyn is currently enrolling patients in its CDI-14 pivotal Phase 3 trial, for PRO 140 as a combination therapy with HAART, and plans to begin patient enrollment during the second quarter of 2016 in its CDI-18 Phase 3 trial, for PRO 140 as a long-term monotherapy.

“With currently approved drug therapy, HIV need no longer be the deadly disease it once was.  However, the drawbacks of HAART therapy, including considerable drug toxicity, patient compliance with programed daily dosing and drug resistance, pose serious issues for this patient population,” said Nader Pourhassan, Ph.D., CytoDyn’s President and CEO.  “PRO 140 has demonstrated in multiple clinical trials a reduction in HIV viral loads and the maintenance of HIV viral load suppression with hardly any side effects.  Our monotherapy extension study is continuing to allow these patients to remain off of their HAART regimen and enjoy an improved quality of life.  We see a significant opportunity with PRO 140 as a HIV monotherapy and in combination with HAART, and we believe that PRO 140 could lead to a new treatment paradigm for many patients living with HIV.”

About PRO 140 PRO 140 belongs to a new class of HIV/AIDS therapeutics—viral-entry inhibitors—that are intended to protect healthy cells from viral infection.  PRO 140 is a fully humanized IgG4 monoclonal antibody directed against CCR5, a molecular portal that HIV uses to enter T-cells.  PRO 140 blocks the predominant HIV (R5) subtype entry into T-cells by masking this required co-receptor, CCR5.  Importantly, PRO 140 does not appear to interfere with the normal function of CCR5 in mediating immune responses.  PRO 140 does not have agonist activity toward CCR5, but does have antagonist activity to CCL5, which is a central mediator in inflammatory diseases.  PRO 140 has been the subject of seven clinical trials, each demonstrating efficacy by significantly reducing or controlling HIV viral load in human test subjects.  PRO 140 has been designated a “fast track” product candidate by the FDA.  The PRO 140 antibody appears to be a powerful antiviral agent leading to potentially fewer side effects and less frequent dosing requirements compared to daily drug therapies currently in use.

About CytoDyn CytoDyn is a biotechnology company focused on the clinical development and commercialization of humanized monoclonal antibodies for the treatment and prevention of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.  CytoDyn is developing PRO 140 for the treatment of the HIV infection.  PRO 140 is currently being evaluated in two Phase 3 clinical trials, the CDI-14 trial in combination with HAART therapy and the CDI-18 trial as a long-term monotherapy.  Results from seven Phase 1 and Phase 2 clinical trials have shown that PRO 140 can significantly reduce viral burden in patients infected with the R5 subtype of HIV.  Phase 2b clinical trial results demonstrated that PRO 140 can prevent viral escape in patients during several weeks of interruption from conventional drug therapy.  CytoDyn intends to develop PRO 140 as a therapeutic antiviral agent in HIV-infected patients and to pursue non-HIV indications where CCR5 and its ligand CCL5 may be involved.  For more information on CytoDyn, please visit www.cytodyn.com .
