New York Underdog Ted Cruz Gets Cheers, Jeers in B
Post# of 65629

Republican Sen. Ted Cruz made a rare trip to the heavily Democratic Bronx on Wednesday, visiting a self-described American-born Chinese Dominican eatery and facing hecklers as he tried to blunt Donald Trump’s commanding lead in New York.
Fresh off winning Wisconsin, Mr. Cruz was greeted at the Sabrosura 2 restaurant by about 50 supporters, who came from Long Island, Manhattan, Brooklyn and elsewhere. He spoke for a few minutes to gathered pastors behind a blue curtain, trying to drum up grass-roots support for the April 19 primary that carries 95 delegates.
Mr. Cruz faces daunting odds here, as a Monmouth University poll released Wednesday showed Mr. Trump at 52%, John Kasich at 25% and Mr. Cruz at 17%. Some have questioned whether him criticizing Mr. Trump for having “New York Values” will damage Mr. Cruz’s chances here, but Mr. Cruz defended his comments.
“If you want to know what liberal Democratic values are, follow Donald Trump’s checkbook,” Mr. Cruz said, citing donations Mr. Trump made to Hillary Clinton, former Gov. Eliot Spitzer and others.
Mr. Cruz frequently criticized New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, accusing him of being beholden to the teachers’ union for opposing the growth of charter schools and saying he cheered when New York Police Department officers turned their backs on Mr. de Blasio. Mr. de Blasio has said Mr. Cruz is unfit to be president.
There are about 46,000 registered Republicans in the Bronx, or 6% of the borough’s voters, according to a 2013 New York State report. There are about 559,000 registered Democrats, the report shows.
Yet the senator is trying to win individual areas to score delegates and create a contested convention with Mr. Trump. New York’s 27 congressional districts have three delegates each, with the other 14 controlled by the state party.
Mr. Cruz appeared with Rev. Ruben Diaz, a controversial Democratic state senator from the Bronx with a wide political network. Mr. Diaz, wearing a cowboy hat, was also heckled as he stood in the restaurant. “Bring the ministers, bring the ministers,” he said repeatedly as he wrangled away from two hecklers behind a curtain.
Later, the two hecklers said repeatedly that Mr. Cruz shouldn’t be in the Bronx because of his views on immigration, interrupting the event before two police officers escorted them away.
“Ted Cruz has no business being in the Bronx,” the protester, who said his name was Rodrigo Starz.
Mr. Cruz’s appearance in the Bronx, long a symbol of urban decay that has boomed in recent years, surprised many in an area of bodegas, barbershops and a loud subway train rumbling overhead. Many of his supporters even said they were surprised he was here. Crowds gathered on the street to take photos.
“It’s pretty incredible, is this how it always is?” said Michael Stewart, a 32-year-old who came from Brooklyn. “I’ve never been to an event like this in New York.”
Rafael Flores, 44, who drove from Long Island to see Mr. Trump, said he didn’t know why Mr. Cruz came. “Maybe it’s 10% Republican,” said Mr. Flores. “It’s a very good question why he’s here, but I guess he’s going everywhere.”
