"Since 2009 I have been giving lectures to University classes on the topic of doing business in China. One of the things I show them is the incredible rise in academic publications in China, as well as the growth in the number of individuals who have BS degrees and PhD degrees. China is eclipsing the entire world in total intellectual power. When I started out presenting these results in 2009, the professors discounted what I was saying with the old concept that degrees in China were not "as good" as degrees in the West. I countered that in my experience China had caught up on many technical areas; I had some anecdotal evidence from hiring engineers in China. Similarly, when I first began presenting figures on publications, the professors would say that many of the publications were not peer reviewed as publications from Western Universities were.
I feel that at present, even with such discounting, China is well on the way to house more total knowledge creation than any other country or region on the planet. This is a hard concept for many people to address. The thought of China leading instead of the US or Europe strikes fear in people's hearts. The obvious solution is collaboration. I have not done a detailed analysis of the papers coming out of China, but in areas like photonics there is a long tradition of multi-institution collaboration . In this way everyone can benefit and there is nothing really to fear. So, engagement and collaboration are the key, not isolation
