China Unicom has cooperated with several China-based IT players including Huawei, LeTV and Mango TV, a multimedia content subsidiary of Hunan Broadcasting System, to establish an Ultra HD alliance, looking to push Ultra HD content and products, according to a report from sina.com.
In addition to products and content, the alliance will also focus on enhancing China's Internet speed and help reduce the fee consumers pay to access Internet.
Through network infrastructure upgrades, the alliance expects Ultra HD multimedia content and related businesses to become key growth drivers in the future.
China Unicom expects its optical fiber network to be fully completed by the end of 2016 and the carrier will be able to start offering high-end optical fiber network services. China Unicom has also prepared over 100,000 hours of Ultra HD video content, 1,400 games and 50,000 music to be launched along with the network service, according to the report.
